Game and Fish going after urban fishing violators

TEMPE, Ariz. -

Urban fishing is popular around the valley. During warmer months, every two weeks, about a dozen lakes are stocked with catfish. But there are some rules that need to be followed, and Game and Fish just nabbed some fishing violators.

Catfish were restocked in one valley lake earlier this month. That same day -- May 3rd -- Game and Fish nabbed some violators for different offenses at several lakes around town.

"Most common and problematic are overfishing. The limits of these fish are pretty small, 4 catfish per person," says Kriselle Colvin, Arizona Game and Fish.

But that's not what Kriselle Colvin found. She had been patrolling at Kiwanis Lake on the day the lake was stocked when she spotted someone breaking the rules.

It was on that point she nabbed an angler for being over the limit of catfish.

"I saw a guy walking to his vehicle with a cooler bag, turned out there were catfish in it. We have problems with people taking them to their vehicles or taking them home and coming back," says Colvin.

Colvin says the rules are clearly posted and can be seen at any urban lake participating in the program.

Penalties range from $60 to $80 and go up for over limit violators.
