DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -

The FOX 5 I-Team has learned that Douglas County District Attorney David McDade is personally asking the GBI to investigate how money is spent in his office.

McDade's letter states he wants the investigation done by an outside neutral agency following media reports questioning expenditures in his office. (CLICK HERE TO READ THE LETTER)

Those reports were generated by the FOX 5 I-team, which has examined the DA's office spending during the past week.

The GBI only does criminal investigations. One source told FOX 5's Dale Russell that the GBI will conduct a preliminary inquiry and then determine if a full investigation needs to be done.

Sources said that McDade's letter was sent to GBI director Vernon Keenan on Wednesday following a closed door meeting by the Prosecuting Attorney's Council on Tuesday.

McDade could not be reached for comment, nor could anyone from the Council.

Prosecutors considered him their key witness, a longtime Gwinnett developer given immunity to spill what he knew about corruption inside county government. David Jenkins testified before a Gwinnett grand jury in 2010. He also met multiple times with prosecutors. Those interviews were videotaped. Four years later, prosecutors agreed to a no contest plea bargain with former commissioner Kevin Kenerly on one count of bribery. He will serve 10 years on probation and pay a $10,000 fine.
