DETROIT (WJBK) -

Fans at Joe Louis Arena Thursday night opened their hears and wallets to help the family of a fallen Wayne-Westland firefighter.

The Detroit Red Wings say firefighters collected over $11,000 in donations prior to Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Chicago Blackhawks. The donations, along with fan pledges and a $3,500 donation by Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg, bring the total raised for the family of Brian Woehlke to $15,029.

Woehlke died while battling a fire at a Westland strip mall on May 8. He leaves behind his wife Jennifer and his 13-month-old daughter Ava.

Fans who could not attend the game, but would like to support the cause can send a monetary donation to the Westland Fire Fighters Charity, P.O. Box 851320, Westland, Mich., 48185, or at any of the five Wayne-Westland fire stations.

Donations can also be made online by visiting www.local1279.org.
