Memorial Day weekend means more traffic on the roads

Posted: Updated:

If you're hitting the road this weekend, you wont be alone.  Plenty of drivers are expected to make use of the long Memorial Day weekend, both in and out of town.

Atlanta police are busy preparing for large crowds this Memorial Day weekend, and they're urging people to be mindful of several major events.  The Atlanta Jazz Festival and the Atlanta Caribbean Carnival are expected to draw large crowds to the downtown area.

Atlanta Police Department Chief George N. Turner says that the police department is prepared, but the public should be prepared for large crowds. Turner also urges those who are attending events around town this holiday weekend to use public transportation, and report any suspicious activity they might see.

APD plans to have plenty of on and off-duty personnel available to help with traffic and security. They're asking visitors to use MARTA or carpool to events to help minimize traffic. Visitors are also advised to walk in groups, avoid isolated areas, and be mindful of their surroundings.

While police are preparing for heavy congestion, travel experts are painting a different picture.  According to AAA Travel, the number of travelers on the road this weekend is expected to decrease from last year. AAA projections show that 1,003,937 Georgians will travel this weekend, which is down 0.8% from 2012. They say 34.8 million Americans are expected to travel over 50 miles this weekend, a small decrease from 35.1 million in 2012.

If you're fueling up to hit the road, there's good news at the pump.  The average price of gas in Georgia is currently at $3.44 a gallon, which is 3 cents cheaper than last Memorial Day weekend.
