New boating laws in effect this holiday weekend

Posted: Updated:

Memorial Day weekend marks the start of the summer boating season.  Authorities are reminding folks that there are some new laws on Georgia's waterways.

The Department of Natural Resources says 180 conservation rangers will be patrolling the waterways this holiday weekend.

Lt. Col. Jeff Weaver is the DNR boating law administrator. He says the biggest change is that boating under the influence law now matches the DUI law.

"Now it's the same on the water as it is on the roadway. So, we like to say, where the rudder meets the road, it's now .08. So, no confusion there," Weaver said.

Georgia law also now requires that all children on a moving vessel under 13 wear a life jacket.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Coast Guard Auxiliary will back up the conversation rangers.
