Car hits pole in Phoenix, causes power outage

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

The area of 16th Street and University has lost power due to a car that collided into a power pole.

The single vehicle collision occurred about 8:45 p.m., and according to Phoenix Police Lieutenant Lowell Spalla, alcohol may be a factor in the collision.

"The vehicle went into a very large electricity pole here, it's probably about a 2-foot radius pole. The power line is actually down on the ground so APS is rolling some of their units out here. They're going to need a big truck to support that pole, which ultimately is causing the wires to bend and break which is causing the power outage," said Spalla.

APS workers are at the scene and we've learned it may be up to 12 hours before power can be restored.

The driver and passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle and taken to the hospital. They  are both in their early 20s and will be ok.

"Don't drink and drive, it's just not worth it," added Spalla.

Northbound 16th Street at University is closed.
