Group faces signature deadline for Arpaio recall

Posted: Updated:

On a warm and windy day, organizers of the effort to recall Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio set up camp outside the County Board of Supervisors building, trying to get enough signatures by the May 30th deadline.

"We believe that if we provide the space and the opportunity -- with our 24 hour petition drive - they're gonna come here," said Beto Soto.

"We're hoping. Tomorrow is the last day -- we've had people come from Mesa, a man just came from Glendale -- and the word is getting out.  And it has to be today and tomorrow," said Connie Wittig.

Daniel Garcia drove in from Mesa to sign the petition.  He feels the Sheriff unfairly targets Latinos.

"Just if you're Mexican you're done for. Can't go driving no place," he said.

Organizers are working 24 hours a day gathering signatures, but their time is running out.  They need at least 335,317 signatures to force a recall election.

"But this is just today -- this is more than a thousand signatures -- only today," said Soto.

The Sheriff's campaign manager sent us a statement:

"We believe the same voters of Maricopa County that just re-elected the sheriff to a 6th consecutive term will reject this recall effort. We believe common sense will prevail as the organizers' latest political stunt will cost the taxpayers over 6 million dollars."

The recall organizers hope to gather tens of thousands of signatures this week to give them many more signatures than they actually need to force a recall.

They say they won't turn them in unless they have enough signatures.
