Toddlers hospitalized after eating prescription drugs

Posted: Updated:

A Phoenix woman is in jail, her children hospitalized after a neighbor spots the kids eating prescription pills like candy.

When police arrived at the scene near 15th and Peoria Avenues, they found the mother passed out inside the home.

33-year-old Jessica Harvey was arrested and charged with two counts of felony child abuse and two counts of felony endangerment after police say her two children were found alone -- outside -- eating the pills.

"I walked out and found them eating it."

This woman, who did not want to be identified, says she was in the right place at the right time.

"It breaks my heart.. it breaks my heart."

The woman lives near an apartment in north Phoenix.  When she came outside to smoke, she says she spotted two small boys 1 and 2-years-old, eating pills out of prescription bottles.

"I just immediately picked them up and put them on our side of the gate and started picking up pills," she explained.

The neighbor says the small white spots seen on a carpet are some of the remnants of those pills that the boys ingested.

"They were prescription drugs that were opened as well as the aspirin," she said.

She says she went to look for the boys' mother.

"I found Jessica just passed out in the hallway.  I bent down and shook her and yelled.. called her, got no response."

Then she called the police.

"She was dragged out into the living room, they flipped her over and put handcuffs on her."

As a mother and grandmother to children herself, the woman is just hoping for the best.

"It just breaks my heart that a mom could do this."

According to the police report, one of the children had a life threatening dose of aspirin in his system, but we do not know their exact condition.

Once released from the hospital, the children will be placed in Child Protective Services' custody.
