Daisy Mountain Fire earns money by advertising on trucks

ANTHEM, Ariz. -

We see advertising on signs, buildings, TV, even on your computer. And here in the valley you will see advertising in an unlikely place.

You can't miss a big red fire truck. Everyone stops and stares. They may be surprised there's an ad on the truck.

"There was initial concern, there certainly was, most of it was what the advertising would entail," says Daisy Mountain Fire Capt. David Wilson.

Daisy Mountain Fire Department makes big bucks with ads like this. They need the money. The fire department runs on property taxes.

"Over the course of the last 5 years, we have seen about a 57 percent decrease in property value, putting a big hit on our operating budget."

Programs like drowning prevention and fire prevention, CPR and first aid classes, along with training and school programs, all gone.

They came up with ads on fire trucks because there is room for it and very it's visible.

"Just through brainstorming we decided to give it a shot. We ran it through the fire board and the fire chief. It was approved," says Wilson.

They have four fire engine trucks, a ladder and a ladder tender. Plenty of room for advertising.

There will also be advertising on ambulances from the white line down.

So far the advertising has brought in $65,000. Captain Wilson estimates it could bring in $95,000. He also believes other fire departments are watching Daisy Mountain.

Not all companies can place an ad on a fire truck. The Daisy Mountain Fire Chef and the fire board must approve the ad before it goes up.
