Primary Day in New Jersey

Posted: Updated:

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) --  Polls are open for the New Jersey primary election.   Voters have until 8 p.m. Tuesday to select the candidates who will run in the November election.

New Jersey's two main-party gubernatorial candidates will get the nod officially as they become the standard-bearers for a November face-off.

Republican Gov. Chris Christie and Democratic state Sen. Barbara Buono face only token opposition in Tuesday's primary. So, they are hoping their victory-night celebrations will infuse their campaigns with excitement that has been lacking thus far.

Christie has been way ahead. He has out-raised and out-spent his opponent. He is popular and well-known, appearing on the boardwalk with Prince Harry and President Barack Obama in the lead-up to the primary.

Buono struggles with name-recognition and fundraising even though she was Senate majority leader and one-time budget chair.

All 120 seats in the Legislature are also up for election, though only 20 have contested primaries and most aren't close.

Two to watch are Democratic primaries in Union and Essex counties.
