PHOENIX -

The largest meth bust in Maricopa County history has Sheriff Joe Arpaio pushing for stricter drug trafficking enforcement.

MCSO is celebrating a victory Tuesday in the war against drugs. After several months of investigations, MCSO officers seized 51 pounds of methamphetamine in Phoenix.

They located 18 bricks of meth, worth nearly $1 million.

26-year-old Armando Chairez was arrested for possession of meth along with several other felony charges.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio says Chairez was working for Mexican drug lords.

"Arizona is one of the largest markets for meth but there's many other areas in the country that this drug may be destined for," said Arpaio. "This is what I call poison. This is a serious type of drug, meth, so I'm glad we were able to crack down and take care of this seizure."

He says the drug has become so prevalent on the streets that the price per pound has dropped from $15,000 to $5,000. He's pushing to dry up the Phoenix meth market.
