Raid nets more than 3,000 pounds of marijuana

Posted: Updated:

Maricopa County sheriff's deputies and SWAT teams served a search warrant on a home near 91st Ave and Thomas Tuesday.

The investigation began when the sheriff's office received tips of a stash house one day ago. They conducted surveillance on the home, and undercover deputies made a deal with the suspects to purchase 2,100 pounds of pot.

It resulted in a huge bust. A search warrant was issued, and authorities made entry Tuesday night.

More than 3,000 pounds of marijuana were located inside the home -- which has an estimated street value of $1.5 million.

"A big operation, came from deep in the heart of Mexico... We don't want it anywhere in the United States. You can see from the way it's packaged it's heading for some other areas too," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio. "All these drugs are coming across the border so we want to stop it, at least in the county."

24-year-old Luis Alberto Lara-Lopez was taken into custody, and the other fled the scene and is still at large. We have learned Lara-Lopez was in the country illegally.

This is the 3rd major drug bust in the valley in one day.
