Republicans and Democrats are criticizing Gov. Chris Christie's call for a special election to fill the vacant seat of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

Political strategist Jeanne Zaino with Iona College and Democratic strategist Basil Smikle weighed in during Good Day NY.

"He tries to make the case that he wants the people to choose. He made a calculated decision to put up this heat to keep Cory Booker off the ballot against him," said Zaino.

"There are 700,000 more Democrats in the state than Republicans. This was a calculated move so he could suppress turn out on the Democratic side in November," said Smikle.

The special election would be held on Oct. 16.  A primary election would be scheduled for August 13.
