Detroit NAACP celebrates 50 years since the March down Woodward

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Many people don't know that the "I Have a Dream" speech was first given right here in Detroit in 1963. After the walk down Woodward Avenue, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the monumental speech right in Cobo Hall.

Now, 50 years later the Detroit NAACP, UAW, and the city of Detroit are coming together for the NAACP Commemorative Walk for Freedom in celebration of Dr. King's impact on Detroit – and the world.

On Saturday, June 22, thousands will gather at the corner of Woodward and Forest Avenue at 9 a.m. in honor of the dream.  The theme for the march is "50 Years Later…We Shall Not Default On Our Dream."

Come out and walk for the progress that 50 years has brought, but also the progress that is still being made!

Michigan National Action Network president Charles Williams II says aFriday evening rally at Historic King Solomon Baptist Church in Detroit continues the spirit of King's 1963 march along Woodward Avenue.
