This could be a game changer for Detroit's mayoral election. Mike Duggan, who was considered a front runner, was yanked from the ballot after a judge said he was not a registered voter in the city for a year before he filed his nominating petitions. He fell just 14 days short.
DETROIT (WJBK) -

A Wayne County Circuit Court judge knocked Mike Duggan off the ballot Tuesday siding with mayoral candidate Tom Barrow and labor activist Robert Davis. She ruled Duggan had not been a Detroit resident for a year at the time of filing.

Duggan announced Wednesday he is taking the case to the Court of Appeals.

"I am the first candidate in history who has been removed from the ballot for filing too early," he said. "Had anybody said to me, you know, you can't file until one year from when you registered, you need to come back on April 16, 2013, I would've taken the forms home and come back two weeks later and filed them."

"We're confident that we will get this reversed."

"It doesn't make any difference whether he appeals to the state courts, to the world court of the Hague or even to Captain Kirk's United Federation of Planets, it's not going to change because the decision was rooted in the case law," Barrow said.

"He needs to blame himself. He needs to look in the mirror and say Mike Duggan messed up. I failed to follow the law, and as a former prosecutor, it's kind of ludicrous at best that now he's trying to say the law should not be followed," Davis said.

"I am embraced by Detroiters as a Detroiter in every neighborhood that I go to, and I am staying in the city for the long run no matter what," Duggan said. "I'm pretty sure if they get a chance to vote between me and Mr. Barrow, Detroiters will express their own opinion."

Absentee ballots go out on June 22, so this has to be resolved fairly quickly. The expectation is that the Court of Appeals will rule within the next few days.
