Valley dad honored with 'Volunteer of the Year' award

Posted: Updated:

A valley dad is honored for his fight against teenage drug use. The National Young Marines has named him the adult volunteer of the year.

Phoenix firefighter Shannon Orick is a former Marine teaching kids about the dangers of drugs.

You could call him a drill sergeant dad. Shannon Orick dreamed of being in the Marines as a kid.

At 17 years old, he left home and joined the Marine Corp. After fighting in desert storm, Orick left the Marines to raise a family.

For over 16 years the veteran has put his life on the line as a Phoenix firefighter. But that’s not the only way he serves the Phoenix community.

Orick is a volunteer at the Desert Young Marines, an organization focused on fighting drug use and training kids to be leaders.

"Our job is to be there for the kids and to provide them a place, a time, the training, leadership they need to run the program themselves," says Shannon Orick.

He was nominated earlier this year, and then awarded the volunteer of the year award for his exceptional service and efforts in drug education.

"With the addition of drug demand reduction, we teach them three hours of drug education every quarter of the year."

The ex-Marine says the award was a surprise. He just wanted to share the values of the Marines with his son and other kids in the community.

In fact, Orick’s son Dalton is following in his dad’s footsteps.

As a member of the Young Marines, Dalton has worked his way up to staff sergeant of his group, the highest position.

He says the Young Marines has given him confidence.

"When I first started in the sixth grade I was actually being bullied and then I got more confidence and leadership from this program,” says Dalton Orick.

Orick is one of six volunteers around the nation to be honored by the young marines. The organization will be accepting new recruits in August.
