FIRST ON FOX: Officer Dragged, Punched While Confronting Newspaper Thief

Posted: Updated:
BROOKHAVEN, Pa. -

There were some scary moments for a Brookhaven Police officer punched and dragged by an SUV after trying to confront a man in the act of stealing newspapers from Delaware County businesses.

Investigators say police have been tracking the suspect for several weeks after striking at least four times, usually between 4:30 and 5 a.m.

Police say the suspect is going after fresh bundles of the Delaware County Daily Times, dropped off by circulation staff at storefronts.

They say the suspect drives up, takes the papers and quickly drives away.

The incident involving the injured officer took place as he was staking out stores near the Brookhaven Market and Deli on Saturday morning.

Investigators tell FOX 29 the suspect first acted as if he was dropping the papers off when confronted by the officer. He later went for his vehicle to get away.

The officer reached through the window and grabbed him by the shirt, but the suspect began punching him in effort to break the hold.

Police say when that didn't work, the suspect hit the gas, dragging the officer a short distance until he let go just before getting pinched between his vehicle and the SUV.

The suspect fled towards Parkside and Chester. Investigators think he may be selling the papers in Chester to make money and has targeted stores in Aston and Parkside.

Officials with the Delaware County Daily Times say they have launched their own surveillance efforts to catch the crook. They would not say how much revenue may have been lost due to the crime spree.
