CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Before sunrise in Lawndale on Sunday, a routine traffic stop turned deadly when a gun-wielding passenger inside the car took off running down an alley. When he slipped and fell to the ground, he reportedly reached for his gun.

"At that point, the officers opened fire, I believe the offender is DOA, weapon was recovered from the offender, no officers injured, the investigation continues at this point," said Pat Camden, Spokesman of the Fraternal Order of Police.

This shooting was just one of several across the city killing at least six people and injuring more than two dozen others.

Just hours before, another shooting that left a blood-stained sidewalk outside the Southway Lounge in Chatham. The shooting happened just steps away from the club's entrance and killed a 40 year old man and injured 3 others.

"We don't feel safe in this area. Maybe from the position that the policemen, there are not enough," said a local store manager.

He says more beat cops are needed to patrol the neighborhood and Douglas Malone agrees.

"They got the police officers out here walking the beats but they have the police officers out here during the wrong hours of the day. You know we have a lot of shootings that are going on up and down 79th Street period," said Malone.

"Because for one, I got out of jail two weeks ago for trafficking and when I got out of jail I was standing on this corner right here and a guy actually pulled a gun on me in broad daylight and the police were nowhere to be found. It's crazy, it's really really crazy over here, something definitely needs to be done," said Malone.
