PHOENIX -

Authorities say a mechanic was trying to help a client with a car by driving it from Prescott to the Phoenix area.

The Phoenix woman who purchased the used car had driven to Prescott and brought the mechanic with her to check it out.

For the drive home, they were in separate vehicles.

Officials say the driver of a sport utility vehicle, who was speeding -- hit the mechanic's car near Interstate 17 and Daisy Mountain Road around 11:20 p.m. Monday.

The suspect's SUV eventually crashed and rolled over in the desert.

"The driver of the SUV while injured, managed to crawl out of his vehicle, tries to escape the scene on foot.. drivers stopped, saw this happening, restrained the suspect driver and held him for MCSO to arrive," said Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves.

27-year-old Carl William Day was later arrested by Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies.  He suffered minor injuries and investigators later found that he had a warrant out for his arrest.

The woman who bought the car is okay.  Her name was not released.

The mechanic has been identified as 61-year-old Victor House.

"There were two ladies in the first vehicle.. they saw all this happen.  They are really good witnesses for us and we don't always have really good witnesses.  They stopped, tried to revive him, but were unsuccessful," said Graves.

The suspect's name has not been released.  DPS officials say he may have been impaired.
