Wildlife managers capture bear in Sierra Vista

Updated:

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) - Conservation officers with the Arizona Game and Fish Department have relocated a bear that was captured in Sierra Vista.

Officials say the young black bear was forced up a tree on the city's north side on Friday. It was darted with a tranquilizer and then transported to the Gailuro Mountains and released.

The Sierra Vista Herald reports that a tarp was used to break the bear's fall from the tree. The animal weighed between 75 and 100 pounds.

State game officials reminded residents to secure garbage indoors or in a fully enclosed area until the day of pickup to avoid attracting bears.

Most recent bear sightings in the area involve yearlings, which wildlife managers say lack established territory and tend to be displaced by older bears when food is scarce.
