Report: Illinois ranks low in beach water quality

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A new report says Illinois' water quality is no day at the beach.

The study from the Natural Resources Defense Council ranks Illinois 24th out of 30 states that have beaches.

One in ten water samples from Illinois had high levels of bacteria, with the worst offenders located in the city. Rainbow, Jackson Park, Montrose, and 31st Street all turned up high levels at least 20 percent of the time.

But the study says things are improving. Beach closures were down more than 30 percent last year and Chicago's water is getting cleaner.
