NYC organization gets $2.9M for Sandy recovery

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - The American Red Cross has awarded a $2.9 million grant to a New York City organization to assist residents affected by Superstorm Sandy.

The grant to the New York Disaster Interfaith Services was announced Tuesday.

NYDIS provides disaster readiness, response and recovery services to New York City.

The funds will be used to administer the New York City Sandy Unmet Needs Roundtable. The program customizes assistance for eligible residents affected by Sandy. It provides emergency cash grants, sustainable recovery grants, loans, discounted tax-free appliances, furniture and building supplies.

NYDIS also will use the grant to coordinate housing needs for volunteers working to repair and rebuild homes throughout the city.
