Suspect arrested for murder and assault in Circle K shooting

Posted: Updated:

Phoenix Police have made an arrest in Monday's deadly shooting outside a Circle K at 51st Ave and McDowell. The suspect fled the scene on Monday, but later turned himself in to Tempe Police.

William Leon Scroggins, 34, was booked into jail on charges of first degree murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping.

According to court documents, Scroggins shot Michael Jamar Abernathy in the head in the Circle K parking lot. Surveillance video shows the suspect pausing, advancing on the victim, and shooting him in the head.

Scroggins then put a gun to the head of the victim's companion, Julian Devon Abernathy, and forced him to the ground, authorities said. Scroggins then fled the scene.

About 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, Scroggins turned himself in to a uniformed Tempe Police officer. He admitted he shot and killed a man the night before, but claimed it was self-defense.

Detectives reviewed the surveillance tape, but it did not show the victim yielding any weapon. When the body was recovered, the victim was unarmed.

Scroggins turned in the firearm used in the homicide, and police say it was the same firearm used in the shooting. At this time, a motive is unclear.

Police asked the court to hold Scroggins on $500,000 bond.
