A woman arrested for allegedly running over a bicyclist and leaving the scene, is the daughter of a veteran LAPD Sergeant. It's unclear if that Sergeant knew about or tried to help cover up the crime.
22-year-old Vanessa Yanez was arrested for allegedly hitting a bicyclist with her car and leaving the scene. The crash happened June 26th on the corner Vermont and El Segundo in Gardena
The victim was 60-year-old Jesse Dotson, who later died at UCLA Medical Center.
"He was a happy go lucky guy and he always you know, got along with everybody," said Lavon Stonum, the victim's good friend and roommate.
Vanessa Yanez reported her car stolen the night of the crash, but after getting a tip police say they found the car at Yanez's home and it was severely damaged, with a broken windshield.
Police also confirm Yanez's father, Arturo Yanez is an LAPD sergeant who's been with the police force for more than 30 years. We went to the Yanez home but were unable to talk to anyone because the family blocked their gate with this car. Vanessa Yanez is charged with vehicular man slaughter, felony hit and run, perjury and filing a false police report.
The victim's close friend and roommate says he's shocked the suspect in the hit and run is the daughter of a longtime police officer, "I was just a little surprised that she hit and run. She would've turned herself in earlier or something," said Stonum.
Police say right now they can't prove whether Sgt. Arturo Yanez knew about or tried to help cover up the crash, but if they do get that evidence Gardena PD will seek criminal charges against him. Vanessa Yanez was arrested and released, with a promise to appear in court Monday.
