Philadelphians Brave The Heat

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

This brutal heat wasn't keeping Phillies fans from sitting outside, under the sun, and watching their favorite team today.

"Ice cold water; Ice cold Gatorade," shouted a vendor.

Those are only some of the things a crowd of more than 38,000 people used to brave the heat during the Phillies' action against Atlanta at Citizens Bank Park.

Everyone has their own story of survival.

"It's about 102 in the seat. They roasted. I had to put my shirts on the back of the seat just to sit down it was that hot," says one fan.

"We were trying to stay between the sections so that the wind was blowing through but it was still awfully hot," says another.

"We try to do the best we can to stay hydrated. Drink a lot of water," says a third.

"We had like 3 Iced Teas and a water and I'm still I got more drinks in the car. We're going to get some more stuff now. That's how hot it is today," says another fan.

Keeping the sun away from the eyes seemed to help a little bit as well.

Lola Carullo, a Phillies fan, had a visor on her head. "It was real hot in there, she says. "At least 95 degrees, I guess. We had the water; we had towels around our neck."

And then there's the more liberating way to catch a breeze: apparently pants are over rated!

"Being true Phillies fans. I'm out here in my boxers living life," says the man who left his shorts home.

And then there's this guy who says he's ready for anyone still hanging around after the game.

"Cold water and Gatorade? Cold water and Gatorade that's it," says the man.

But the best way to stay cool may have been a little ways away.

"It's really hot out here so water ice really makes you cool down," says two customers at John's Water Ice.

Turns out a lot of other people thought so too. John's Water Ice at 7th and Christian Street had a steady flow of hot people looking for some relief, and maybe a quick sugar fix too.

Walter Lynch says,"Cherry and chocolate. Nice mixture. Don't think of chocolate that's not a water ice flavor, it's a great flavor."

Brenda Nguyen says, "I actually grew up around here so this is like my childhood place to go for something cool."

"Everybody's been overheated. They all want water ice. Doing our job," says the owner John Cardullo.

John Cardullo says he's just fine with some high temps if it means a boost to business .

"Keep the hot weather coming," he says.
