Storms wreak havoc in San Tan Valley

Updated:
SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. -

Some people spent Sunday cleaning up after a weather alert swept through the San Tan Valley Saturday night.

Residents say the storm only lasted about 10 minutes, but it was powerful enough to cause some serious damage to homes and knock out power for nearly 2,000 residents.

A mangled mess was left behind after a strong thunderstorm pounded a San tan Valley community.

"It looks like a bomb went off," said Bill Conrad, a resident.

A pile of twisted metal used to be a bolted down shed. It's now in the middle of the street, several yards from the property where it once stood.

Keith Steinke lives across the street.

"That shed was huge and I'm surprised it didn't take down those power lines, so we are...real lucky," said Steinke.

The fast moving wind knocked out power for at least 1,800 residents.

"It came on so quick. All we heard is a big wind and bunch of bang and power went out," said Conrad.

"[I was] ready to leave the house. We thought it was going to come in, we thought it was over," said Steinke.

Residents say the storm lasted about 10 minutes.

"Literally the rain was coming straight at the house. There was nothing that indicated it was a tornado, seemed like a microburst," said Steinke.

Rural Metro says no one was hurt in the storm, but the property damage was felt by many residents.

"A lot of awnings have disappeared, a lot of fencing. It's gone. Some of it you can find, some of it you can't. You'd have to go down a few blocks to find it all," said Steinke.

SRP says a few dozens people were still without power Sunday night. They plan to have the power back up by Monday morning.
