I-10 freeway back open after man hit fleeing officers

PHOENIX -

Eastbound lanes of I-10 were closed for hours Tuesday after a suspect who was being pursued by DPS ran across the freeway and got hit.

According to DPS, a traffic stop was initiated on 30-year-old Sindy Renne Rios-Rodriquez at about 2:30 p.m., but it's not clear the reason why. He stopped near 35th Ave, then fled his vehicle on foot, and ran onto the roadway.

"The driver, a male in his 30s, fled from the traffic stop. At that point he entered the main traffic lanes of interstate eastbound and was struck by a white SUV," said Raul Garcia Jr., DPS.

The driver of the SUV was not hurt.

Rios-Rodriquez was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He's in extremely critical condition.

DPS say he's a Mexican national.

Crime tape surrounded the area while DPS investigated. All traffic was detoured off of I-10 at 43rd Avenue. The freeway was closed for hours, but is back open Tuesday night.
