2 arrested after police led on chase through Mesa neighborhood

MESA, Ariz. -

Police arrested two men after officers were led on a chase through a Mesa neighborhood on Tuesday night.

An officer attempted to pull a vehicle over near Broadway Road and Center Street, but the driver allegedly ignored the officer and continued driving.

Shortly afterward, Mesa Police say a passenger, 27-year-old Estevan Baumea, jumped from the vehicle and was taken into custody.

Gang detectives were in the area in unmarked cars and attempted to follow the vehicle, but lost him.

The vehicle was later found abandoned about four miles away from the attempted arrest location.

Police set up a perimeter around near Broadway and Gilbert Roads and also had the help of an Air Unit overhead.

Officers say several residents called reportedly seeing the suspect, 23-year-old Jose Enriquez Baumea, jumping walls and running through backyards.

After about an hour, officers say Jose Baumea jumped a wall from a backyard and ran toward a vehicle parked in the street--all in front of detectives in an unmarked vehicle.

When detectives approached Jose Baumea, police say he tried to run and officers deployed a successful Taser.

Jose Baumea was taken into custody and then to a hospital for an evaluation.

He'll be booked on charges of  Unlawful Flight from Law Enforcement, Residential Trespassing, and Manipulating a Car Door Handle when he's released.

Estevan Baumea had two Felony Warrants for his arrest.
