Water main break causes sinkhole in Woodstock

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -

Crews say an aging sewer system is to blame for a water main break in Woodstock early Thursday.

Police closed a section of East Cherokee Drive at South Holly Springs Road all day while crews worked to repair a huge sinkhole that opened up.

The water main break happened about 2 a.m., sending quite a bit of water gushing out. This caused a sinkhole -- measuring 20 to 25 feet in diameter and seven to eight feet deep -- soon after.

Crews from the Department of Transportation, Department of Water services and Atlanta Gas & Light were on-hand to oversee filling in the sinkhole and resurfacing the road, in addition to repairing the water main while preserving the integrity of nearby gas lines.

Officials were hoping that the weather would cooperate and allow them to finish covering the hole and reopening the road by Thursday night.
