The right name could screw up the write-in name

DETROIT -- If your name is Mike Duggan (two G's) or Mike Dugan (one G) or Mark Doogan or Mack Diggler there may be a job for you in Detroit politics.

It won't pay much but it requires no heavy lifting. You won't even be required to show up for work. Your role will simply be that of spoiler.

And I'm told that some mayoral candidate camps and some unions are shopping around for a man with the right name who's lived in the city for a year.

Why? Remember the colossal screw-up of Mike Duggan, a front-runner for Detroit mayor. He filed his candidacy papers too early -- a violation of local election law. Last month, the Michigan Court of Appeals threw him off the ballot. So Duggan has launched a write-in campaign for next month's primary.

State law allows a misspelled name to count as a valid vote as long as the intent of the voter is clear. So if a voter writes in DOOGAN it will count for DUGGAN.

But what if there is already  a DOOGAN on the ballot? Then the voter's intent is not clear. What if there is DUGAN on the ballot? Who gets that vote? And who, exactly, would get a vote for MIKE DUGGAN if there are two Mike Duggans?

Detroit politics. You gotta love ‘em.

Good luck Mike Doggendorf. Your affidavit is due at the clerk's office July 26.

For another point of view on the write-in campaign, play the video in the player.  Charlie talks to voters who have a message for the candidates about what they need.  Charlie also discovers a number of graffiti posts around the city that deliver the message: Write-in-Duggan. Is this a write-in campaign or a write-on campaign? Play the video -- Staff.
