Long Island Sound water advisory lifted

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Westchester County health officials have lifted the boater and swimmer advisory about the Long Island Sound in Rye Harbor, Milton Harbor and Greenhaven in Rye; and Mamaroneck Harbor.

An underground main break released sludge near where the Blind Brook empties into Long Island Sound.

Testing now shows that the water does not pose a public health risk, according to the county's Health Department.

The following beaches have been reopened: Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club, Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club, Shore Acres Pointe and Harbor Island Park Beach, American Yacht Club, Shenorock Shore Club, Coveleigh Club and Greenhaven Association, all in Mamaroneck.

The force main was taken out of service at about 2:15 pm on Monday. High tide hindered repair efforts, say officials, but repairs were finished Tuesday evening and water was pumped through the pipe during the night, officials said.

It is not clear how much sludge entered the Sound.
