Some Tea Partiers want more conservative running mate for Snyder

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

Segments of the Michigan Tea Party are privately discussing finding a more conservative candidate to join Governor Rick Snyder on the ticket next year.

Those dissidents believe that Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley supports policies that are not in line with the conservative wing of the party, which is why they are talking about finding somebody else to run.

We asked Michigan Tea Party Leader Joan Fabiano whether there have been discussions about removing Calley from the ticket.

"There's been discussions about a conservative option," she said. "We feel that a conservative would better represent a majority of the party."

The governor refuses to be drawn into a public debate with the Tea Party, which has opposed him on a number of issues, including the bridge to Canada, Medicaid expansion, raising revenue for the roads and now this. For his part, the governor is standing behind his running mate. But what about that Tea Party challenge?

"Brian Calley's an outstanding lieutenant governor. That's the main statement I would make. He's done a tremendous job for the state, and he's been a great partner in reinventing Michigan," Snyder said. "I would love to have him working with me."

Fabiano wants the Republican convention to make the pick and not the governor. Suffice it to say he and they are not on the same page as they may be headed for a nasty political showdown.

About 75% of the school children across the country are already in school but not in Michigan, where the tourism industry has convinced lawmakers to delay the opening of school until after Labor Day.
