Supporters of election changes to fight referendum

Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - A legislator who championed a new law changing Arizona's election process is leading a group opposed to a citizen's referendum on the measure.

Sen. Michele Reagan says the anti-referendum group may launch legal challenges to that effort and campaign against it if it gets on the 2014 ballot.

According to the Arizona Capitol Times, the Scottsdale Republican says the group already has funding lined up.

The law's changes include making it harder for third-party candidates to get on the ballot, trimming the permanent list to receive early ballots by deleting people who don't actually use early ballots and limiting who can return a voter's early ballots.

Democrats opposed the legislation supported by Republican legislators and signed into law by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer.
