Allegiant passengers stuck on hot tarmac for 2 hours

MESA, Ariz. -

An Allegiant Airlines flight was stuck on the tarmac at a valley airport Wednesday, and things got pretty toasty inside.

Allegiant Flight 1002 from Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport finally landed in Oakland around 5:46 Wednesday night.

22-year-old Megan Barber was greeted by her anxious parents, Karen and David Peterson.

They're visiting emergency room nurses working at Stanford Hospital for the summer.

The couple says their daughter texted from the plane:

"She said on the plane, remember if I die, I want my organs donated," said Karen Peterson.

"It was almost like a hostage situation. We're getting texts from her, but she couldn't get off the plane. We felt pretty helpless," said David Peterson.

It was about 106 degrees at Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport Wednesday.

"Any time your body gets overheated, you have a risk of getting heat stroke and it was probably like 100 degrees. IT was like sitting in a hot car," said Megan Barber.

Barber, a nurse herself, says she was specially concerned for the elderly and the children on board.

Allegiant Airlines, based in Las Vegas, says there were 157 passengers onboard.

The delay was caused by maintenance issues, including a broken microphone.

"We are not able to turn on the engines of the aircraft while it is sitting at the gate so the AC that is pumped into the aircraft is not as strong as you would get from the aircraft," said Allegiant spokesperson Jessica Wheeler.

Another passenger says the flight crew was accommodating and did what they could.

"They apologized, they gave us water, they kept us as comfortable as possible, they gave us food, they gave us a free drink of our choice," said Dianna Hill.

"I don't know if I'll fly them again. They are good prices and everything. I don't know if it's worth it," said Barber.
