Grand Canyon National Park monitors 3 small fires

Updated:

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) - Grand Canyon National Park officials say they're monitoring three small lightning-caused fires on the canyon's north rim.

2 of the fires started Sunday and the third on Monday. The largest as of Thursday is a half-acre burning in forest about two miles from the north rim's entrance station.

Park officials say for now they're allowing the fires to burn. They say they're taking into consider the locations, the fuel being burned and the objective of allowing fire in ecosystems where fire naturally occurs.

The canyon's north rim is receiving seasonal rains so park officials say they expect the fires to remain small.

The fires haven't resulted in any trail or road closures.
