Chicago Teachers Union calls layoffs 'shameful'

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Teachers Union is railing against a Chicago Public Schools plan to cut 2,110 employees, including more than 1,000 teachers.

CPS announced the layoffs late Thursday. Officials blamed the cuts on the failure to reach a deal in the Illinois Legislature on pension reform.

CPS faces a $1 billion deficit this year. It includes a $400 million increase in the district's annual pension payment.

Among those laid off are 1,036 teachers. The remainder is support staff, including teacher assistants, food service employees and janitorial staff. The layoffs are in addition to 850 teachers and support staff let go in June.

CTU President Karen Lewis says in a statement Friday the cuts will directly impact the quality of instruction in CPS schools.

She says the cuts are "unnecessary and shameful."
