Parking lot cleared for new UA enviro building

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A parking lot is being cleared in Tucson to make room for the long-awaited construction of a new home for environmental sciences at the University of Arizona.

The $75 million project will result in a resource-efficient building that will resemble a slot canyon.

The Arizona Daily Star reports (http://bit.ly/127ytRh) that the building will house classrooms, conference space, labs and offices for researchers in an array of environmental fields.

It will be the first permanent home for the university's Institute of the Environment since its creation in 2008.

Institute co-director Diana Liverman says the lag in construction was understandable, given the economic climate of the state since the promise was first made.

Over the last five years, the university has hired 30 environmental researchers in disciplines ranging from English to archaeology to economics.
