Designer drug manufacturer, distributor found guilty

TEMPE, Ariz. -

A 51-year-old drug manufacturer and distributor from Cave Creek was convicted on Friday.

Michael Rocky Lane was found guilty by a federal jury for manufacturing and distributing designer drugs disguised as household cleaning items.

Authorities say Lane began working with Nicholas Pascal Zizzo at Consortium Distribution in early 2011. The men allegedly manufactured a designer drug called "Eight Ballz Bath Salts," which contained powerful stimulant, MDPV.

By October 2011, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) made MDPV a Schedule I controlled substance, and authorities say Lane had to find a replacement chemical to use in a new designer drug, re-labeled as "Eight Ballz Ultra Premium Glass Cleaner."

Authorities say the cleaner was never intended to be used as a glass cleaner or bath salt, but was designed to intoxicate users.

Lane started his own drug manufacturing company called Dynamic Distribution in fall of 2011.

He made "Amped Lady Bug Attractant Exuberance Powder," "White Water Rapid Lady Bug Attractant Exuberance Powder" and "Snowman Glass Cleaner" under his new company.

Each disguised product contained powerful stimulants, including APVP, APBP, MPPP, and Pentedrone.

Authorities say Lane made nearly $8,000 a day from domestic Internet sales of his products to individual customers alone.

Lane was arrested after the DEA served search warrants to Consortium and Dynamic as part of Operation Log Jam, a nationwide, investigation to combat the designer drug manufacturing and distribution business.

Conspirators Nicholas Pascal Zizzo, Benjamin Joshua Lowenstein, Vincent Collura, David Titus, Andrew Scott Freeman, Clinton Strunk, Scott Stone and Daniel Pollock are awaiting sentencing.

Lane's sentencing is set for October 21.

He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years, a $1 million fine or both.
