DPS Physical Test: 500 candidates try to become officers

Posted: Updated:

If you want to be a DPS officer, there are a couple of tests that you must pass. One of those tests is very physical and challenging.

It isn't easy. Lots of pushups, sit ups and running relays.

The Department of Public Safety is looking for about 100 good men and women to join their ranks.

"This is a chance for us to see where you are on a baseline level, for us to make a determination to make it through the academy," said DPS Sgt. Eric Anspach.

But they' must pass two tests, written and physical, to get to the academy.

"You never judge a book by its cover but you never know if people are going to perform. It looks promising."

Hundreds of people are hoping to make the cut, but they have to be in good shape if they want to be DPS officers.

There are five tests, all taking place at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

This is a pass or fail test, there is nothing in between. If you don't pass you have to reapply.

The toughest test is set for last -- running one and a half miles around the stadium.

"We always wait to the end for that one, that's the most challenging,"

If they make it to the academy, the drills will be a lot tougher.

Those applicants who pass the physical test will have to take the written test. There may be some sweating on that one too!
