NOGALES, Ariz. -

A Nogales man with "trusted traveler" status was arrested Wednesday after trying to smuggle a woman into the US inside his trunk, according to US Customs and Border Protection.

27-year-old Juan Carlos Chavez was referred for a second inspection after he was unable to open his trunk during his initial inspection at the Port of Nogales.

CBP says a 34-year-old woman from Mexico was hiding inside the trunk.

The Secure Electronic Network for Traveler's Rapid Inspection (SENTRI) allows members to use a commuter lane that makes the inspection process faster for low-risk travelers.

Chavez would have undergone an extensive background check and in-person interview to qualify.

"SENTRI members are treated with a higher level of trust, but are not exempt from inspection," said Port Director Guadalupe Ramirez. "Violations, such as alien smuggling, will not be tolerated. Those attempting to exploit the program will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

The woman is being held as a witness in the case.

Chavez was transferred for federal prosecution.
