Children wander away from home, found in different city

Posted: Updated:

A 6-year-old girl and her 4-year-old brother wandered away from home Friday and weren't seen for hours. Thankfully, those children were found a short time ago. But there are still a lot of questions -- how they got out, and how they got so far from home.

The Avondale kids were found in Goodyear, several miles away. They left their home near Central and Van Buren about 4 p.m. Friday, while their father was asleep and their mom was at work.

When their dad got up, the kids were gone. They had changed out of their pajamas and took their dog out on its leash.

While walking their dog, a man waiting for the Metro bus gave them $2 to get on a Zoom bus with their dog. The bus dropped them off at a YMCA water park at Litchfield and Thomas.

A man at the water park became concerned about the unsupervised kids and called the fire department. Firefighters picked them up about 8 p.m. -- they were barefoot.

Cody Donnafield is a neighbor. He helped search for the kids when their father discovered them missing.

"Grueling. Driving down every street, I started to think the worst, that someone took them. Where are they," he says.

11-year-old Desire Sampson saw them at the park earlier sometime between 4 and 5 p.m.

"We left, we started having second doubts. We thought oh we should've stayed with them.. until their parents got home or something. We came back and they were gone," she says.

The dad says he's grateful they're home, but is still beside himself over the ordeal. He says he plans to put deadbolts on the doors.

The kids had never been to the water park before and hadn't ridden a bus since they were infants.

When asked how they planned to get home, they told their mother they planned to sleep at the water park.

There's no word if anyone will face charges.

We reached out to Valley Metro to find out how two children and their dog were able to get on a bus unsupervised in the first place.
