CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

If you have dreams of working the police beat on Chicago streets, you'll soon have your chance.

According to the Chicago Police Department, Superintendent Garry McCarthy will start accepting applications for those interested in working on the force on Aug. 1.

The department will also recruit potential officers to make sure the department is fully staffed.

Recently the CPD has hired more than 400 new officers, ramping up the police force to fight crime in the city.

"We recover more firearms in the City of Chicago every year," McCarthy said Monday, "[more] than any other police department in the country."

The superintendent said more than 4,000 illegal guns have been taken off city streets since the beginning of 2013. He also said there is still much to be done.

McCarthy said police would continue to partner with neighborhoods to fight the criminal behavior that has Chicago at the tipping point.

This comes while police investigate the shooting of a four-year-old girl on the South Side.

The little girl is recovering and in good condition after she was shot at 71st and Rockwell in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood Monday night.

Family members said Khalise Weatherspoon was playing outside with friends when two guys ran up the alley and started shooting. She was hit in the stomach.

Emergency crews said Weatherspoon is expected to be okay.

"The kids that are getting shot are innocent kids," Richard Spires told FOX 32 News. "My granddaughter doesn't even know what a gun is, she doesn't even own a gun - it's ridiculous man."

Police said a 31-year-old man was also shot.

The suspects have not been arrested.
