Crews continue to repair broken Lithonia water main

LITHONIA, Ga. -

Crews spent much of Wednesday repairing a main break on Layton Drive at a DeKalb County facility, located just outside of Lithonia.

Water filled several streets near Lithonia Industrial Boulevard in the morning hours, blocking them off to traffic as crews worked to fix a broken 2-foot water main in front of the county's water tanks.

Some of the water from the main, which is located uphill from several nearby homes, washed into a couple of neighbor's yards. One of those neighbors, Angie Wingfield, says she's worried about the size of the facility that's practically right in her backyard.

"My son came in and woke me up," says Wingfield. "When I came, I heard the yard was just flooded. He walked up there on the hill and he sees the water coming out like that. Big things of water up there, but it never happened like this before."

Neighbors said they're concerned because of the large facility at the top of the hill. If the tank had ruptured, they could have had a much more serious problem, including flooding into their homes.

Wet weather didn't help in the repair. County crews worried about the possibility of sinkholes forming in the soggy ground.

"We have crews out working in the rain right now," DeKalb County spokesperson Burke Brennan said Wednesday afternoon. "The rain tends to slow them down.  It tends to compromise the soil and make it a dangerous situation. They're proceeding methodically, but as expeditiously as possible to get this area back on line."

Crews also did some landscaping to keep some residents on Parkway Road out of another watery mess.

FOX 5's Darryl Carver reports that there was minimal service eruption to the area. Just one street – Layton Drive —had homes without power. Crews expected to have the break fixed by Wednesday evening.
