Daulton Talks On Radio, Fans And Friends Show Support

PHILADELPHIA -

He was a good-looking, blue collar tough guy that was the heart of the ‘93 Phillies. Today former catcher Darren Daulton is fighting for his life.

"We've had some hiccups this last couple months. But I'm back," he said today.

Daulton spoke publicly on for the first time since having life-threatening brain surgery to remove a malignant tumor at Jefferson Hospital. Speaking with Mike Missenelli on 95.7 the Fanatic a month after surgery, Dutch says that he's feeling good.

"This thing is going to work out. I know that. I feel great right now," he said. "I'm actually starting to work out. I feel great physically."

Dutch announced he will be at the ballpark on Sunday, alongside his teammates when the Phillies honor his 1993 team for winning the National League Pennant 20 years ago.

"It scares the hell out of me, It honestly does. When you sit there and look at a teammate knowing what he's going through, it's just not fun," says Mitch Williams, a Former teammate.

"He is a truly wonderful man. And all we can do is say a prayer for him and hope that it goes well," says Jim Fregosi, the former Phillies manager.

Many fans were listening to Dutch on the radio, on the way to tonight's game.

"I had a stroke recently, and I was amazed how clear he was able to talk because they get into that brain. It's dangerous," remarks Don Wright.

"When I was a kid Darren Daulton and Dykstra were the 2 biggest guys," remembers Mark Butterline.

Dalton, who is 51 now, says he still has trouble talking. But some days are better than others.

"Trust me. Trust me I am going to be a lot better. And I'll be right back perfect," he says.
