PHOENIX (AP) - A Chandler man has been sentenced to 36 years in prison in connection with the death of his baby daughter in 2010.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 23-year-old Sergio Thomas also was sentenced Friday to lifetime probation for second-degree murder and two counts of attempted child abuse.

Thomas was arrested in December 2010 after his 7-month-old daughter died from skull fractures and bleeding in her brain.

Police detectives and medical authorities questioned Thomas to determine what caused the girl's injuries.

A forensic pediatrician determined she suffered abusive head trauma.

Thomas says he and his wife were separated at the time and he was the sole caretaker of the child.

He told police he was frustrated with the baby crying and not sleeping at night and he hit and shook her.
