Dog alerts owner to neighbor in distress

Chips Chips
SUN CITY, Ariz. -

They don't call them man's best friend for nothing. A valley man says a neighbor's dog helped save his life.

Bonnie Dodson recently moved to Arizona from out of state with a few of her pets, but it's one of her dog's that's really making a name for himself in her new neighborhood.

Dodson's black lab mix named Chips has proven he truly is a good boy.

"He is never more than 15 feet from me at all times night or day," said Dodson.

It was a few weeks ago, when Chips started acting strangely.

"He cried and cried and cried at me when I was watching TV," said Dodson.

Little did Dodson know, her neighbor was in trouble.

On my way back to the house, I somehow stumbled and fell," said Jim Treece, Dodson's neighbor.

"[I] realized he was crying because the man next door had fallen and was calling for help. He heard the man calling for help,  my neighbor," said Dodson.

"I was yelling, 'Help, help'," said Treece.

"He fell in the backyard and couldn't get up. He was in the stones, 105 degrees and the stones were burning him," said Dodson.

"I've gotten old and tired and can't do the things I used to do so I couldn't get up," said Treece.

"I came back got my phone and called 911," said Dodson.

"Fortunately, a dog heard me and rescued me," said Treece.

"If it wouldn't have been for Chips crying, I wouldn't have known he was down," said Dodson.

"I never hoped for help like, that was a gift of God," said Treece.

Chips has a new nickname around the neighborhood.

"They call him 'The Hero'," said Dodson. "I'm the mom of the hero, the four-legged hero."

Dodson says Chips was a stray that she rescued a few years ago.

She says he was badly abused when she got him, but now the two are very close.
