Katie Albright, 19, knows all about an alarming and growing obsession with young women: it is known as a "thigh gap."

Young girls are taking pictures of their own "thigh gaps" and posting them on social media sites like Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, Snapchat and Pintrest. It is not about looking sexy but the competition with one another to be skinny.

"I always joke around with my friends we want to have the gap between our thighs if our thighs rub together it's a turn off I guess," Albright said.

Dr. Connie Quinn of Renfrew Center said: "It presents the image of this is who I am I am only the sum of my thigh gap I nothing else I'm not a daughter friend a student I am this thigh gap. It's very sad."

Quinn said this disturbing obsession has recently grown in popularity because of the influence of celebrities. There is a whole twitter page devoted just to supermodel Cara Delevingne's "thigh-gap."

If you are a parent and you find what you just saw disturbing the Renfrew Center suggests you talk to your kids about healthy eating and encourage them to accept all kinds of body types.
