Police: Brothers shot in Evanston business were murdered

EVANSTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Evanston Police are now calling the deaths of two brothers murder.

Police on Tuesday were canvassing the north suburban area where two brothers were found shot to death in their tobacco shop last week.

The bodies of Azim Hakeem, 38; and Mobeen Hakeem, 34, were found in the basement of Evanston Pipe & Tobacco at 923 Davis St. last Tuesday night, according to Evanston police.

Police received a call about 8:20 p.m. Tuesday from a family member who found it unusual that the door to the business had been padlocked.

Both victims, who lived in the 400 block of Custer Avenue in Evanston, suffered multiple gunshot wounds from what appears to be a small caliber weapon, police said Tuesday.

The North Regional Major Crime Task Force Forensic Team has completed its examination of the crime scene, a statement from Evanston police on Tuesday said.

NORTAF continues to analyze evidence, gather data, conduct interviews, and follow up on tips, police said.

Robbery has not been ruled out as a motive, since both men's wallets have not been accounted for, police said.

During the course of the preliminary investigation, nothing was found that would indicate the existence of an imminent threat to the downtown business community, the release said.

The Task Force on Tuesday was conducting a time canvass in the area of the 900 block of Davis Street.

"My brothers were gentle, humble men that did not deserve anything like this," Farheen Hakeem said in a statement taped to the family's door last week.

"Both were great brothers, sons, nephews and cousins. We trust that the Evanston Police will find the monsters that brutally killed them, and we thank you all for the love and support."
