Santa Ana City Manager Will Earn Sky High Salary

Posted: Updated:

David Cavazos is currently the Phoenix City Manager, and Cavazos was picked as the new City Manager for Santa Ana.  Cavazos was sworn in at the City Council meeting Monday a he'll start his new job in October.

But some wonder if Santa Ana should be paying such high dollar to get Cavazos here, in fact Cavazos will make about $60,000 more than the previous City Manager.

Cavazos will make more than half a million dollars in total compensation a year, $315,000 thousand is his base salary.  The rest he will make in benefits like retirement, $36,000 for housing during his first year and $7500 for moving expenses.

Some wonder if the city could put the money to better use.  "There's a lot of stuff to take care of, job creating, attracting more business.  Make it easier to do

business here so there's more jobs, things like that," said Oliver Zhang, who's moving to Santa Ana.

"Yes we could find less experienced, less connected, less capable people, for less money.  But that is the most important job we have within the city administration," said Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido.

The base salary Cavazos is making is the same as his salary in Phoenix, but Phoenix has a population of nearly 1.5 million people, Santa Ana's population is only about 330,000.

Mayor Pulido says you get what you pay for and he says Cavazos job includes creating jobs, attracting business and helping the city's overall economy.
