Sun City killing: Court documents reveal new details

Posted: Updated:
SUN CITY, Ariz. -

There are new developments surrounding a possible mercy killing in Sun City. Wednesday, Howard Rudolph was arrested after admitting to murdering his 83-year-old wife.

At first investigators thought it was a mercy killing -- but newly released court documents paint a more twisted picture.

Investigators are sorting out why Howard Rudolf allegedly killed his wife in their Sun City home after 13 years of marriage.

"He was immediately taken into custody he told deputies that he had to do it because she was sick," said MCSO Sgt. Brandon Jones.

Could it be a mercy killing, or something else entirely?

"By all indications it looks like right now a mercy killing, it looks like it could have turned into murder-suicide."

But newly released documents on the investigation detail a letter Rudolph reportedly left to his attorney. In it, instructions to cremate the "bodies." And there was another note -- one that was allegedly found under the handgun -- that points to a rocky relationship between the couple.

In it, Rudolph writes of his 73-year-old wife Earlene Rudolph: "I do love her  money goes to shelter  she is so hateful  I can't stand her."

Wednesday morning deputies say the 78-year-old man got drunk and then took his wife's life using a handgun.

Her bloody body later was discovered in the bathroom. Rudolph was booked for first degree murder.

"Could this be just a murder? It could be just a murder but we are not close to determining that at this point," said Jones.

Court documents also show deputies had been called to the home several times. We are working to obtain those reports and will continue to follow this story as it develops.
